First Grade Friendsgiving | Photo Album

As part of the first grade community unit we have been learning about special and unique places that make The Orchard School a community. On Tuesday, November 21, students immersed themselves in a very special event that included sharing a "Friendsgiving" meal at the cabin! We were honored to have some special guests join us, including Mr Rosenbluth, Mr Schwartz, and Mrs Shellhaas, Orchard's Outdoor Education coordinator.

This student driven event included different student teams that were responsible for every aspect of our day. From meal prep and serving to invitations and decorations to clean up and reflection, first graders did it all! Academic subjects and even some of our special content areas were integrated into the day's activities.

As anyone who has hosted a dinner party knows, the challenges and joys of fixing and serving a large group meal offered plenty of opportunities for students to apply different concepts and skills in order to problem solve any issues.

Fun Fact: Twenty two years ago, Mrs. Shellhaas (Outdoor Education Coordinator) and her first grade students were the first to share a "Friendsgiving" meal at the cabin after its completion in August 1995.

Enjoy the pictures,
