The Class of 1945

The Orchard Class of '45 consisted of 7 boys: Charles W. (Buddy, Charlie) Culp; Frank (Frank/François) H. Dailey ; Weber (Web/Webby) D. Donaldson, Jr. ; Michael (Mike) B. Fairbanks ; J. Daniel (Dan/Danny) Nyhart ; Robert (Bobby, Bob, Robbie) D. Robinson, Jr. ; Stephen (Steve, Etienne) A. Wainwright. Naturally, "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs" was chosen as our Spring Pageant. We appropriated Marjorie Tarkington, Orchard '46, to play Snow White.
Here's what's become of us 70 years later. Dan Nyhart, deceased, had a distinguished career at M.I.T. as Dean of Student Affairs and later as a Professor at M.I.T's Sloan School of Management. Dan earned a B.A. at Princeton and a J.D. at Harvard. Tragically, Mike Fairbanks was killed in a car accident in his last year at Wabash College. He was awarded a B.A in 1953 posthumously. There are five old Indians remaining: Charlie Culp., Yale '53; J.D. Harvard '58 is still a practicing attorney in Indianapolis; Frank Dailey M.D. I.U. B.A.'53 & I.U. School of Medicine. Now retired, Frank lives in Columbus, MI. He also practiced internal medicine in Yukiah, CA and Saudi Arabia; Web Donaldson, Ph.D '70, French, I.U., retired, was a French professor and Chair of the Department of French and italian at Tulane University. Awarded Palmes Académiques '80 by French Govt; Bob Robinson, M.D. graduated from Dartmouth College and IU School of Medicine. Now retired, practiced Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Bloomington and abroad: Japan, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam and Grenada; Chairman of the Dept of Medicine and Director of Medical Education St Vincent Hospital 30 years; Clinical Professor of Medicine, IU Medical School. Steve Wainwright, Ph.D., U. Cal., Berkeley & M.A. Cambridge Univ., was Professor and Chair of Biology at Duke University where he was named James B. Duke Professor Emeritus.

Voilà, in brief -- as "Missy" aka Twanet Evans Cummins, our beloved French and 8th grade teacher might have put it -- is what's become of the seven dwarfs of the Orchard class of 1945! We look forward to receiving our honorary diplomas at graduation on May 29 symbolizing our deep affection and attachment to Orchard and the strong bond that exists among the graduates of 1945.
