The Orchard Core: VETERINARY SCIENCES WINTERM

Written and photographed by: Sofie (8th grade), Lucy (8th grade) and Kate (8th grade)

Today we met up with another Winterm, “Veterinary Sciences,” who had visitors from the Pet Adoption Wagon (PAW) by the Humane Society. They brought three dogs to Orchard…Girlypop, Lamar, and Hank. We learned about the adoption process of dogs. When in the shelter, all animals are evaluated by a medical team for behavioral issues. If an animal has any behavioral issue, it will be put on their adoption card.

Depending on the condition of each pet, they might get special training and accommodations. Those accommodations include foster homes for animals who are too young to be spayed or neutered. Once all medical checks are completed and taken into account, the animals can be looked at and meet new families!

The Indy Humane Society began taking in pets in 1905. In the past three years, they have taken in an average of 3800 animals. They are located on Michigan road in Indianapolis, but they also have another clinic on Holmes Ave.

“Veterinary Sciences” is led by sixth grade math teacher Dr. Aiyasami Sreenivasan. He wants to help create more awareness about pet adoption. It took Dr. Aiyasami six months to schedule this important experience for his Winterm.
