Making Math Fun: Orchard Sixth Graders Construct Derby Track In This Student-Made Documentary

This student-directed and edited documentary highlights the unique opportunities that Orchard students experience every day. Only at Orchard will you find teachers willing to build a massive derby track with their students, in order to make math fun and engaging.

"The 6th Grade math room had become a work shop. The plans for creating a track began, starting with algebra questions that would determine how to build it. But, there was never paper and pencil; students would gather around and solve the questions together. It was more engaging when the equations had actual meaning that would contribute to the track being built. When the planning ended, all kids worked on the construction. They began to design car ideas as creative as their minds could go. Independently, by choice, they could also build an at-home-car for extra credit that would drive in a separate race. Incorporating geometry, the students successfully accomplished this stage and began to race their cars down the tracks."
