Orchard Graduate and Trustee Of The Mara Elephant Project Presented To Second Grade

“Trey Fehsenfeld '06 is a trustee of the Mara Elephant Project. He came to speak with second graders last week about his work protecting elephants and preserving the Mara ecosystem in Kenya. Trey shared his organization's innovative solutions, including using drones, tracking collars, and an interactive app, to mitigate the human-elephant conflict in this region and keep elephants safe.”
Erica Christie | Second Grade Teacher

The students loved hearing all of Trey‘s amazing stories and they were excited to share their ideas about how to help the elephants.

    • Brainstorming

Second graders had wonderful ideas for keeping elephants safe.

    • Good thinking!

A lot of the second graders were coming up with ideas very similar to ones Trey's team tried in the past, such as making a scarecrow to put in the gardens.

    • Drone Footage

Footage from a drone. The drone is used as a safe way to keep elephants out of people's gardens. Trey is alerted when an elephant gets too close to a garden and his team will fly the drone (which sounds like bees... causing the elephants to run), as opposed to shooting the animal.

    • Live Footage

Trey showed the group real-time tracking of specific elephants from his phone. They LOVED this!
