Orchard Spotlight: Community Project - 1st Grade

The first grade students are studying communities and relationships as their overarching theme. To kick off the season of unity and celebration, they began to explore the world of our Orchard community. They have been learning that every person has a role and every individual is important to the community as a whole.

Each student had the opportunity to interview and shadow a member of our Orchard community to understand and see firsthand the importance of their job and the role they play. They worked with administration, teachers, specialists, lunch helpers, and the maintenance crew, among others. The children then came together to share what they learned and drew portraits of those they spent time with. They also created an interactive bulletin board with words they feel make up a thriving community.

The students created a yarn community web to represent that we are all connected and support each other. In order for the web to stay intact, each first grader needed to do their part and support the web, just like in a real community. This experiential activity served as a catalyst to jumpstart their deeper understanding of community and relationships.

Their essential questions are:
  • What is a community?
  • Who is in our community and how are they different/similar?
  • What makes a sustainable community?
  • How do our choices affect our community?
