Science and Engineering in Early Childhood
Science and Engineering education start early at Orchard! Students in multiage (ages 3-5) were able to experience pulleys in a very hands-on way. Students learned that a pulley requires an object to lift (each child had an opportunity to be an object) and power to raise the object in the air (the remaining children in the class created the power). Children could choose when to say stop as they were hoisted into the air. The tallest spot they could be lifted was three stories off the ground!
In additional to the science curriculum, students learned to work together as a team, as well as the importance of good communication to keep everyone safe.
Students will continue this unit in their classrooms during the last few days of school by creating their own pulley system. What a great opportunity for our youngest students to immerse themselves in experimental learning!
