Orchard Fourth Grader Started A Toy Drive After Visiting Riley Hospital
Nine-year-old Carrington is a fourth grade student here at Orchard. She's also an active member of New Haven Missionary Baptist Church and the Indianapolis Colts Junior Cheerleaders. And on December 16th she will host her 5th Annual “Carrington & Friends | Caroling for a Cause," which is a toy drive to benefit children who will spend the holidays in the hospital.
This was Carrington’s idea after seeing a sick child in the hospital during the holiday season in 2012, when she was only four-years-old! "When I was little I wondered if Santa would come down their chimneys. And I just wanted to make sure those sick kids got toys," Carrington said.
Carrington's mother, Shelly, informed her that parents were more interested in the gift of good health for their child and not so much toys. "She asked if I could purchase toys for her to take to the child and I told her no to figure out a way to get toys to them," Shelly said. "We were hosting a Christmas party and going caroling in our Illinois neighborhood and as guests RSVP’d she asked them to bring one toy per family to take to the hospital. And thus Carrington and Friends was birthed."
The event will convene at Riley Children’s Hospital-North on December 16th, 2017 from 12 to 3PM. This years contributing sponsors are McNamara Florist, Massage Envy, Classic Cakes, Jason’s Deli and The Wellington Banquet Facility and Conference Center.
When asked how long she plans to continue this event, Carrington confidentially said, "I think I will do this until I'm 90-years-old."
