Preschoolers had a big day last week when they invited their families to a special reception where they performed in the annual Spring Sing and debuted their #onlyatorchard Identity Projects.

Rather than a formal affair in the theater with stage lights and risers, Mrs. McSpadden decided that spring sing was the perfect time to celebrate our amazing musical community. Adults sat on the floor or in chairs in the Early Childhood gym near their preschoolers and enjoyed a combination of performances and group-sing style renditions, with audience participation. Each class prepared one nursery rhyme to perform for the audience, including some very silly original verses. We sang together, laughed together, and we even shed some happy tears together. It was the perfect return to Spring Sing. Mrs. McSpadden is grateful for all the adults who attended and participated, and of course, she’s so proud of all the wonderful preschool musicians.

The identity projects ranged from unique field guides to custom books, and from treasure boxes to framed tree-cookie identity boards. Students used real tools in the #OrchardMakerspace, nature treasures from the Orchard Woods, paint and other art supplies, and so much more to create their one-of-a-kind works of art.

Students have spent most of the entire year having important discussions about identity and how it impacts the community. And because this work is happening at such an early age, children will be well-versed in celebrating multiple perspectives as they move towards their adolescent years—developing a passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion well into adulthood.

Someone once said, "Big important change starts with the littlest of learners."

Well done, Owls!
