WOW! What an incredible Earth Day celebration at The Orchard School today!

Deputy Mayor Judith Thomas was the keynote speaker at an environmental stewardship event we co-hosted at the Orchard Cabin. Thanks to Ahimsa for co-hosting the event. Presentations for the community leaders in attendance included:

-Students at the Ahimsa table discussed using safe, sustainable materials like stainless steel to replace plastic in the cafeteria

-Orchard students educated community leaders about the impact of school gardens

-The Patachou Foundation hosted a scratch cooking demonstration by their student Food Fellows

-Earth Charter Indiana’s student representatives discussed decreasing food waste within school cafeterias

Fun fact: Orchard parents work for all of these featured organizations!

While this event was taking place, hundreds of orchard parents, alumni, and students helped beautify our campus—prepping flower beds, lining the trails of our woods, lending a helping hand in the hoop house as we continue with its reconstruction, moving rocks and firewood, and so much more! They ended with s’mores over an open fire in nut town (outdoor learning space).

Students also incorporated Earth Day into their work today: for example, first grade does an A-Z countdown to the last day of school. Today was C (chalk) day so they decorated the front of the school with Earth Day messages.
