The Orchard School Families Project: Asava Family

What’s your definition of family? Although the dictionary has different definitions of family, the meaning of the word is special to the individual. The Orchard School Families Project was designed by Orchard's Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lisa Pryor, in collaboration with the Diversity Committee, as a way to build connections and celebrate the families we have in our community. The project is very simple, what does family mean to you? We asked some families to answer very simple and fun questions that explain what makes their family unique. We hope you will take the time to get to learn more about the families that make up our community. After all, we are all a part of the Orchard family!

THE ASAVA FAMILY:

The Asava family consists of Caroline, Dennis, and Mason. They have been in the Orchard community for a little over a year and Mason is currently a first grader in the Martin/Vorenberg classroom. Their definition of family goes beyond the conventional definition of
a group of people who share the same ancestry/DNA or live under the same roof as you and expands to include “the community or network of people around us with shared interests who care, support, love, trust and inspire us to be the best possible versions of ourselves.”

Their family traditions involve vacationing and meeting up at a destination once a year with out-of-state family. These trips are extremely special because the Asavas “love the opportunity of creating new memories and seeing the world through the eyes of others.” The Asava family also enjoys a daily home-cooked meal together where they pray over the meal and talk about the highs and lows of their days. They have birthday celebrations as a way of appreciating and commemorating another year, and they create a few New Year's resolutions before ushering in another year on New Year's Eve. Their family celebrates Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s holidays and the favorite family memory is their magical trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

When asked what makes the Asava family the Asava family, they indicated they were all influencers driven by the reward of giving back to the culture around them. They make a conscious effort to and absolutely love gravitating to those who are different from them and not afraid of being different. They identify as Kenyan-American, Hoosiers, and Boilermakers. They are fun, imperfectly perfect, eccentric, loyal, there for each other, and unwavering fans of one another, and their favorite sports teams including The New Zealand All Blacks, Manchester United F.C., AFC Leopards S.C., and the Indianapolis Colts.

Thank you, Asava family, for sharing your family with the Orchard community!
