Maddie McGloin '17, currently studying at Boston Architectural College, recently stopped by Orchard to reconnect and conduct research for her internship with CSO Architects in Indianapolis. The company was designing a new elementary school in Columbus, IN, and Maddie focused on integrating natural elements like the surrounding woodland into the project’s layout and materials.
As an intern at CSO Architects, Maddie researched, sketched, and took notes for a new elementary school project, in collaboration with Höweler + Yoon Architects. She visited The Orchard School and Holliday Park in Indianapolis as precedent studies, integrating natural elements into design schemes and community meetings in Columbus, IN. (July 2024)
Inspired by her time at Orchard, Maddie thought our campus would be the perfect place for her research.
“There are inexplicable qualities about Orchard which make it the ideal place for a young and curious child to soak up the world. It’s an environment that encouraged my curiosity and made me fall in love with learning. In studying architecture, I am uncovering reasons about why space is sacred to us—and that we shape the world as the world shapes us. Education is a foundation for the mind, and upon it (and other core experiences) we choose what gets built. To say I am grateful for the 11 years I had at Orchard is an understatement. I am proud to be a third-generation alumna of the school that leads with such excellence of education, reaching far beyond the classroom.”

In addition to her internship, Maddie has been working as a Visiting Architect with several Boston-area elementary and middle schools, supporting project-based learning units on math, construction, and architecture. This effort aligns with her focus on youth involvement as Chair of Outreach for the BAC Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), a role she has deeply enjoyed. She was recently named President-elect for the 2025–2026 academic year and is excited to serve the student body and school in this new capacity.
Maddie’s creativity also made its way into print last fall. Two of her written works were featured in The Harvard Advocate’s Fall 2024 Land Issue, showcasing her artistic range.
We were thrilled to welcome her back—not just as a proud alum, but as someone carrying Orchard’s spirit of curiosity, nature, and innovation into everything she does. Keep building, Maddie. We’re so proud of you! Scroll down to see more photos of Maddie in the field, with friends at college, and living out her Orchard roots.
