Video: Spotlight On Orchard Coach/Teacher Justin Burris
During the school day, Justin Burris is The Orchard School's sixth grade social studies teacher. After school, he's our amazing track and field & cross country coach.
Burris has coached cross country at Orchard for six years. His overall XC record (combining boys and girls) is 691-66. His owls collected seven conference titles during this time.
He's been the track and field coach for nine years where he holds a record (combining boys and girls) of 455-19. He's won 14 conference titles in this department.
With many winning seasons under his belt, Burris is particularly proud of this season.
"I am proud of many things; but, most of all, I am proud of our cross country athletes for working with assiduous efforts to achieve progress. Our primary goal for the runners is always earning improvement, both physically and mentally; and every athlete on the squad, the largest team ever assembled at Orchard, demonstrated vast progress this season with an average improvement of more than 2 minutes and 48 seconds per child. For me, this is the most essential, continued trend for our program.
When collective growth is produced on a scale like our athletes exhibited, the winning takes care of itself. The Lady Owls won their fourth consecutive IISL Championship, and the boys won their second conference title in a row. Additionally, both teams earned top 10 finishes at the Indiana Middle School Cross Country Championships, the largest middle school cross country event in the nation (over 2,000 participants). The girls finished in ninth place, while the boys were this year’s Runner-up."
