Orchard’s After-School Program Teams Up With Food Relief Program Just In Time For Thanksgiving

The Orchard School and Second Helpings have teamed up together for our 3rd Annual Pasta Drive. Second Helpings is a non-profit organization that helps the greater Indianapolis community in several ways. Second Helpings' main goal is saving food by accepting donations (whether it’s produce that won't sell or by food drives like Orchard is participating in) and turning the donations into healthy meals to feed both children and adults in Indianapolis. Second Helpings other priority is by teaching unemployed or underemployed adults through their 7-week culinary arts program at no charge.

By teaming up with Second Helpings, The Orchard School hopes to help our students realize that there are children and families in our community who do not receive enough food to last them though the month and the donations brought in by our school help volunteers create thousands of meals. Second Helpings rescues over 2.3 million pounds of food every year and with our donation of pasta, salt and pepper, we hope to increase the meals served this holiday season.

Our Pasta, Salt & Pepper drive is taking place through Monday, November 19th. Our goal for 2018 is 230 pounds of pasta, salt and pepper. Kroger currently has pasta for .49 when you purchase 10 and their seasonings are buy 1 get 1 free.

So how can you include your child to help relieve so many families in need? Have your student go to the grocery store and help pick out some pasta, talk about your favorite meal you share together as a family and how there are families in Indianapolis who aren't as fortunate. There are bins with DONATE HERE - Second Helpings located in the Center, Middle School Commons and Early Childhood Entrance for your donations. For more information regarding our 2018 Pasta Drive, contact our Kids Connect Coordinator, Anne Westphal, at awestphal@orchard.org.
