Head of School Blog "First Week Reflections"

Dr. Sherri Helvie

Dear Families,

Our first of week of school is off to a great start, and it’s wonderful to have all of our students back on campus, from multiage (preschool) to middle school. We celebrated our first week back with a spirit day assembly, and I had the honor of showing my school spirit by wearing the Orchard owl costume. Go Owls!

On Saturday, the Board of Trustees held its fall retreat in the Dignity Center to kick off our work for the school year, and we began our day with an experiential learning demonstration from multiage faculty Julie Wingate, Heather Girton, and Melissa Jackson. They shared their takeaways from attending the Nature-Based Preschool conference in Chicago, and Trustees were able to experience nature-based literacy, nature mapping, and mindfulness practices as they learned more about our multiage program and some of the inspired teaching practices that set us apart from other schools. It was a joyful way to begin our day, and Trustees were glad to have the opportunity to experience the teaching and learning that is a hallmark of our Orchard program.

As I visit classrooms, playgrounds, gyms, and performance spaces, the students are busily and happily back to school, and it’s a pleasure to have them here.

Best,
