Head of School Blog "Hello, Orchard Community"

Dr. Sherri Helvie
Dear Orchard Community,

Hello, and happy summer! I’m so happy to be writing to you from Indianapolis, and on site at The Orchard School. I wanted to send a brief note to share about my first few days in Indianapolis, and the focus of my work for the next several weeks.

My family and I arrived in Indianapolis a week ago, and we've enjoyed getting to know the city and settling in--which has included enjoying the thunderstorms, and catching fireflies every night. At the end of the week I was at school for two days working alongside of Tom Rosenbluth. He very kindly made the trip from Michigan so that we could connect and share information to ensure a smooth transition for the school. Our time together was very helpful and productive, and I’m excited about the work that lies ahead.

For the next several weeks, I will be primarily focused on one of the key areas articulated in the Charge to the Head of School: Community Building and Connection. I will be hosting entrance interviews with faculty, staff, board members, alumni, parents, and students to listen to and understand Orchard’s inspiring history. I encourage you to share your thoughts on what we can achieve together as an Orchard community by taking a few moments to send me a note here. I look forward to hearing from all of the people who make our community such a special place, and beginning our collective work of building common purpose and a shared vision for the future of our school.

The days and weeks ahead will also include collaborating with the administrative team to plan for the new school year. In addition, I will begin connecting with the larger Indianapolis community to build partnerships that will help us promote the value of an Orchard education.

I look forward to connecting with you soon, and in the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me or stop by if you’re on campus. I’m eager to work with such an exceptional community; the work we do together creates the joyful learning environment for which Orchard is known and loved.

To Orchard!

Sherri
