Spotlight: Orchard Kindergartener Is State Champion On Parallel Bars, Wins 8 Medals at Gymnastics Competition

[Photos begin at the bottom of this article]

Harrison is a kindergarten student at The Orchard School. He’s six years old and LOVES gymnastics! Turns out he's pretty good, too.

Last weekend, he traveled to Mishawaka to compete in the USGA (United States Gymnastics Association) State Men’s Competition. Every competitive team in the state packed into the Gymnastics Michiana facility. He competed at Level 4 D1, which means bonus moves are allowed making it more competitive.

Here are Harrison’s results:
  • 1st place: parallel bars
  • 2nd place: pommel horse
  • 3rd place: high bar, rings, vault
  • 3rd place all around
  • a participation medal
  • state team medal=1
Pretty good for being the youngest competitor at the meet!

He is most proud of his "all around" 3rd place finish because “they add all your scores together and the highest all together score wins….they even add the stuff after the decimal,” he said. He was quick to point out to his mom that only two kids had higher scores, so he has mastered subtraction...which makes his teachers happy!

“This is Harrison's first year at Orchard and he came in and made instant connections with other students,” Mrs. Hawkins said. “We knew he was a gymnast, and were so excited to see him shine on the floor. It's been fun to watch that same determination come out in the classroom.”

Orchard is proud of you, Harrison!
