“An important part of Orchard’s Mission is to prepare our students to be active citizens in the world and agents of equity and justice. I am proud to see a student driven action, such as this middle school walkout for 17 minutes on March 14th, that demonstrates empathy and solidarity with fellow students in Florida and around the country who have the reasonable dream to be able to go to school without fear of violence. The walkout was optional. Teachers were present to make sure all were safe. It is inspiring to see young people empowered to find their voice on an important issue.”

As a child-centered school, we foster active citizenship rooted in justice, integrity, character, ethics and courageous compassion. Honoring student voice and choice is a tenet of Orchard's progressive education

The school’s position is one of solidarity with the students and families who have been victimized by recent events. It is a stance in opposition to anyone who would go to a school intending harm. That is an easy position to support. A number of students in grades six through eight expressed interest in participating in the national walkout. Those interested were invited to attend a meeting during their team time last week. In response to our students, it was decided students in grades six or above choosing to participate will gather on the green for a solidarity walk around the soccer field, track, and cabin.

Administrators supervised students on the walk while teachers remained in class with students that chose to remain inside. The walk was not a parent or community event and our younger students did not participate.
