Two Orchard seventh grade girls (Ruby and Grace) joined an audience of 12,000 who attended Bankers Life Fieldhouse on February 13 to see “A Moderated Conversation with Former First Lady Michelle Obama.” However, Ruby and Grace earned premier seating at the event! Women’s Fund of Central Indiana, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation offered two free tickets with “Student Media” passes for students at The Orchard School.

To be considered for the tickets, girls at Orchard had to write an essay about two topics:

1.
Imagine that you have been given the opportunity to write a letter directly to Michelle Obama, telling her why you would like to hear her speak.

2.What are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? How might these change in the next 20 years?

Needless to say, Ruby and Grace were thrilled when they found out they won the tickets. Below is a sneak peek of what they took away from their evening with Michelle Obama. The girls will write about their experience in more detail for the upcoming issue of the middle school newsletter, Silvis Magister.

“It was very inspirational. I feel like I could go out and write an entire book about the experience. She talked a lot about the issues women deal with and there’s more than I thought there was, and they’re worse than I thought they were. Women have trouble speaking up about the issues that they have…and if they don’t speak up these things can’t change. I feel like I can change these things after seeing Michelle Obama.”
-Ruby

“It was really cool seeing Michelle Obama. I knew I wanted to see her because Michelle is really inspiring. She’s made a difference and is continuing to make a difference for girls in the United States and all over the world. She’s just a really good role model.”
-Grace
