Orchard's MLK Jr. Assembly Included Poetry, Music, and More!

Pictures and a quick video follow this article.

This morning the Orchard Community celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator Marcus Hatcher led the Assembly that included lots of meaningful moments. As students settled in, a video of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech played over the loudspeakers. Orchard’s choir teacher Dustin Klein played the piano as Orchard parent Rhianon Hatcher sang the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” And the student body was invited to recite the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mr. Hatcher.

To wrap up the assembly, several eighth graders recited original poems. In English class, students have been reflecting on Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech and they recently created a poem in the style of their choosing. Work varied from haiku style, to slam poetry, and even featured a rap-style poem! A few students were chosen to perform their poems at the Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly in front of the entire school; we could not be more proud of our eighth-grade Owls!

Mr. Hatcher concluded with a simple question: “How will you continue the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior in your daily life?”
