VIDEO: Orchard Students Cut Ribbon on Buddy Bench After Years of Cap Collecting

Led by Orchard fifth graders, Lily and Joci, the Buddy Bench project was originally inspired by Sammie’s Mission which resonated with Orchard students’ strong desire to support our environment and grow our community. This recycling/inclusive project will create a place for students (new and current) to sit when they feel ready to join a group, but might not know how to initiate conversation.

Orchard first posted about this bottle-cap-to-bench project in August of 2019 and a steady flow of cap collection ensued for the next couple of years. Overall, the entire Orchard community donated more than 300 pounds of caps! After many sorting and cleaning sessions, the caps were sent away to be melted down and transformed into materials for the bench.

Today, Lily and Joci were joined by Head of School Sherri Helvie, Early Childhood & Elementary School Director Heather Girton, Middle School Director Angie Brothers, and friends from the Class of 2024 as they cut the ribbon to officially unveil The Orchard School’s Buddy Bench.

“We hope that everyone enjoys it and that it gets used. We’re happy that we got to help the environment to not have so much plastic. And we hope this is as helpful for Orchard students as it was for other schools.” -Lily & Joci
