Orchard Students Hoist Hand-Crafted Equity Flag

Eighth graders, who chose to skip recess for this project, joined Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lisa Pryor and Makerspace Coordinator Scott Weaver to craft a special wooden flag to hang in the Center at The Orchard School.

VIDEO: CREATING THE FLAG

Students decided to create a version of the Progress Pride Flag, made by graphic designer Daniel Quasar. The flag has become a universal icon and a turning point for trans and people of color in the LGBTQ community. Read more from Daniel here

After our students worked through the mathematics of cutting each piece, painted the panels, and glued them to the frame they assembled, they came up with their purpose for the flag:

"This flag stands as a representation that all individuals and families are welcome and belong in our Orchard community. ALL ARE WELCOME HERE."

This flag joins the others that hang from the rafters in the Center that represent the faculty, staff, students, and parents of our current school community. Each year the flags are updated and it’s time again to ensure these symbols accurately reflect who we are.
