The Orchard School Families Project: Hamilton Family

What’s your definition of family? Although the dictionary has different definitions of family, the meaning of the word is special to the individual. The Orchard Families Project was designed as a way to build connections and celebrate the families we have in our Orchard community. The project is very simple, what does family mean to you? We asked some families to answer very simple and fun questions that explain what makes their family unique. We hope you will take the time to get to learn more about the families that make up our community. After all, we are all a part of the Orchard family!

THE HAMILTON FAMILY:

The Hamilton family consists of David ’00, Rachel, Eli, and Miles. Eli is currently a Kindergartener in the Dillon/Land classroom and Miles will begin at The Orchard School in 2020! They have a long history at Orchard dating back to before David started attending in 1991 as a Kindergartener. David’s other siblings, Dana '96 and Jarrett '05, also attended Orchard and David’s mother, Linda Hamilton, was on the Board of Trustees and now is on the Board of Governors.

Their definition of family is a group of people who have a connection and have formed intentional and meaningful relationships with one another. “Family is unconditional love, friendship, sacrifice, joy, and happiness,” says the Hamilton family. Eli’s definition is, “Um, it means, Mommy, my brother, my daddy, and me. It means you love someone, you take care of others, and, it basically means everything.”

The Hamilton family has some old and new traditions including visiting Santa at the North Pole, hunting for Easter eggs, dressing up as a family for Halloween, hayrides to the pumpkin patch, picking apples each fall, and a yearly trip to Atlanta to visit friends and family. They celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, New Year’s, the Fourth of July, and Easter. Eli gets very excited for the celebration of each holiday!

One favorite memory is the yearly family vacation taken in July with David’s parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews. The entire family stays in a big condo or house and enjoys each other’s company. There are 18 people, mostly children, and it’s always beautiful chaos. Eli’s favorite memory is going to Kings Island for roller coasters, games, and blue ice cream.

When asked what makes the Hamilton family the Hamilton family, they shared, “All of our goofy personalities make us the family we are. We play, debate, sing, dance, laugh, and LOVE. We spend a lot of time with our extended family. And we spend a lot of time enjoying our love for basketball.”

Thank you, Hamilton family, for sharing your family with the Orchard community!
