Alumni and Retired Teachers Return to Orchard to Reconnect and Reminisce

Earlier this month, alumni and retired teachers were welcomed back for various activities to help celebrate Orchard’s 97th birthday on October 2nd.

Pictures follow the write-ups accompany the bold headlines.

Founders’ Day Prep Work With Brian Schutt ’94
Third graders were looking for an alum to come speak to their class about Orchard history. Third graders enjoyed chatting with Brian as he helped them prepare for their annual Founders’ Day assembly.

Alumni Career Fair
Orchard graduates returned to chat with middle school students about their careers and share memories from their time at Orchard. Students had the opportunity to hear from a very diverse group of professionals.

Alumni Happy Owler
Alumni Heritage Association sponsored the Happy Owler Tent at Fall Festival.

Alumni Awards Program
On Saturday, October 5th alumni and retired teachers gathered in the Steve Thompson Gym for the Alumni Awards Program. The Alumni Heritage Association inducted retired teachers into the AHA by giving them an honorary Orchard diploma that read: “In recognition of years of service, demonstration of excellence in progressive teaching, and evidence of a willingness to educate the whole child, this honorary diploma is presented to…”

The AHA also handed out two Alumni Awards. The inaugural Distinguished G.O.L.D (Graduate Of the Last Decade) Award. The Distinguished G.O.L.D Award is given to an alumnus/a who has graduated from Orchard in the last ten years and has made a significant impact in the community, their education, or career while maintaining Orchard’s Core Values.

The Distinguished G.O.L.D Award was given to Sophia Pruitt ’17 for her fundraising work with the Humane Society of Indianapolis. Click here to read more about Sophia’s passion for animals.

Mary Bookwalter ’62 received the Distinguished Alumuns/Alumna Award, which is given to an alumnus/a who personifies the mission of The Orchard School by developing knowledge, confidence, and character essential for a life of learning, leadership and positive contribution to society.

High Schoolers Return
Students from Carmel High School, University High School, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, and North Central returned to campus for a visit. A lot of high schools were out for either fall break, religious holidays, or parent-teacher conferences. This usually means we see an increase in alumni visits! Everyone knows the best way to spend time off from high school is to return to your Orchard family. :) We loved catching up with these 2019 grads!

University High School’s Robotics Club Joins Orchard’s Technology Class
Eighth graders in technology class have been building projects in the wood shop before coding them to carry out specific tasks. Prior to putting their work on display in the middle school commons, they received a special visit from University High School's Robotics club.

University's visit was interactive and fun. It also showed our students that there's another level of coding and robotics waiting for them at the high school level. However, perhaps the best part of the school's visit was getting to see Orchard grads Olivia M. '18 and Allie S. '18 again. Both are in the Robotics club and both are doing well in high school.
