The Orchard School Hosts the 15th Annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference

Last Friday, the Indianapolis Area Private Schools Diversity Consortium held the 15h Annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference in the Steve Thompson Gym at The Orchard School. Students from Orchard, University High School, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, St. Richards Episcopal School, Park Tudor School, and Cathedral High School attended the student-led conference.

The conference kicked off with Keynote speaker David Gibson, Jr., who is one of the nation’s most powerful voices of inspiration. He is on a mission to help leaders envision greater possibilities and experience greater realities. You can read more about David here.

These are the student-led Breakout Sessions designed to help make an impact on school communities (it was great to see a couple Orchard graduates leading these sessions):

University High School
When White Kids Talk About Race
The Impact of Hate Speech in Schools

Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School:
Leading the Next Revolution: Creating Student Activists

Park Tudor School:
Visually Understanding Your Interconnected Life

Cathedral High School:
Gender Bias Bings
Cultural Jeopardy

The day ended with focused group time for students to work with their peers and come up with action plans on how to apply all of their new knowledge.

Orchard’s Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lisa Pryor was thankful that the Student Diversity Leadership Conference was back at Orchard this year. “It was such a powerful time with students full of amazing conversations and ideas that came from our time together,” she said. “I’m excited to see how the resources and information are utilized in the future.”

Out of the 80 plus students who attended, five were Orchard alums and 16 are current students! In the video below, a few Orchard eighth graders give their feedback from the conference.
